100 Ways of EarthFit- Day 16: The Little Things

I don’t know any fitness facility or gym that centers around conservation in their practices.  Most facilities have the most updated equipment but don’t worry themselves with aspects of decreasing their carbon footprint, or conserving water or electricity, or preserving species.  So, when I check out gyms on a trial membership, I look for the little things.

This week I’ve been visiting Workout Anytime, a small 24-hour gym just down the street from us.  It is a very small gym, but it packs a powerful punch.  I think what was so refreshing to me was all the little things.  It was especially refreshing when some of the bigger gyms we had visited in the past didn’t have little features that made it more endearing to me.  For instance, they have water bottle fillers attached to their water fountains.  It may not seem like much, but it’s a small feature that promotes reusable bottles.  Their bathrooms have energy saving lights that come on automatically when you walk in.  Their vending machine only offers clean energy snacks.  I want to do some more research on some of their products because I’m not really sure how great “Muscle Milk” is, but they also offer Quest Bars, and I’ve done a little digging into Quest products, and they are in my top 5 favorite products for eating clean, healthy, and green.

Workout Anytime has most of the popular fitness equipment- treadmills, ellipticals, and spin cycles, as well as benches and smith machines for squats.  But what was great for me and my husband was all the CrossFit-type of equipment they have- kettlebells, sandbags, plyo boxes for box jumps, row machines, and pull-up station (of course, I strained my trapezius on our first day doing my first pull-up, which basically ruined my workout, but that’s besides the point).

The cost is next to nothing for this tiny place that has all these little extra amenities.  This place is so positive, we are seriously considering joining.  We have a couple more places we want to try out, but I’m actually feeling like those other gyms are going to have to step up their game if they want to compete with a place like Workout Anytime.  It’s one of the hidden gems for fitness and doing your part to make the world a little better.

Now, I’m going to bed to sleep like a baby after our super-met-con this afternoon.
